A landscape in charcoal

I chose charcoal for this sketch to render the dark and fairly flat tones. Again I did it on an A4 sketch pad and spent just under an hour on it.

STEP 1

In my initial pencil drawing I was aiming to place the reflections accurately from the very start.

STEP 2

As charcoal is so unstable, I pinned down the important dark outlines of the picture with a black brush-pen. This meant that the drawing would remain in place whatever smudging might occur. I drew the outlines of the reflections with a wavering broken line to suggest the movement of water. The tree branches would be useful later to retain the character of those parts of the reflections.
